Nearby cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Richmond all have government jobs available, while the flourishing wine industry in the Northern Neck remains a source of employment.
Attractions & Points of Interest
Like much of Virginia, King George County has a long history steeped in the Colonial Era. Established in 1720 from Richmond County, the area was named after King George I of Great Britain. While American hero and first President of the United States, George Washington, was actually born in the county next to King George County, President James Madison was born in Port Conway. This area was also where John Wilkes Booth traveled through King George County, crossed the Rappahannock River into Caroline County before getting arrested for the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.
Miles of shorelines, marinas, old wharfs and charming towns make King George County a quaint tourist attraction. Swimming, fishing, boating and sailing at the beach are very popular, especially during the summer.
One of the more recent draws to the region are the small vineyards and wineries that have sprouted up since the 1970s. It has grown so much in importance that the government established the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace American Viticultural Area, sanctioning it for wine appellation.
Held on the second weekend of October for the past 50 years, the King George Fall Festival celebrates the autumn season and the community by raising funds for the King George Fire & Rescue. Besides food and fair fun, the festival involves a parade through town, a carnival with rides and games, a dance and the crowning of the Fall Festival Queen Pageant.
